Title: Jagannath is Equally the Buddha and Kali: A Liberatory Ecosystem of Shakta Philosophy and Orissa’s Tantric Heritage

Neela Bhattacharya Saxena is a scholar of comparative literature, religion, and feminist philosophy, with deep engagement in the spiritual and philosophical traditions of India—particularly Shakta, Tantric, and Indic ecological thought. Her work bridges East and West, exploring the Goddess traditions of India through the lens of lived experience, philosophy, and feminist theology.
In her upcoming talk she delves into Odisha’s rich tantric landscape, which intricately weaves together Buddhist, Vaishnava, and Shakta spiritual paths. Highlighting the self-luminosity of the Devi, she speaks to the liberatory framework of Shakta Advaita — where Dvaita, Advaita, and Shunya are seen as a mandala of integration. In contrast to androcentric metaphysics that isolate Purusha from Prakriti, her interpretation celebrates a life-affirming worldview where duality is not denied but joyfully integrated in the dynamic dance of Shakti and Shiva.

Prof. Saxena’s work emphasizes the power of Shakti as the creative pulse of life—expressed through art, birth, and awakening—presenting a compelling vision of spiritual ecology rooted in feminine wisdom and tantric heritage.
